President awards "diamond diplomas"
On the occasion of the 60th diploma anniversary, the graduating class of 1965 from Clausthal University was honored by the President. The entire event was organized very ceremoniously by the Alumni Management of Clausthal University of Technology.
In the festively decorated Aula Academica, the jubilarians reminisced about their student days in the Oberharz. University President Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Schattauer took the more than 30 guests - many of the alumni were accompanied by family members - on a journey back to 1965 in her welcoming address.
The "Bergakademie Clausthal Technische Hochschule", as it was officially known in the mid-1960s, had around 1,000 students at the time. Today, in the year of its 250th anniversary, there are three times as many. Ms Schattauer drew a line from the past to the present: under the guiding theme of "Circular Economy", the university is now working on innovative solutions for the complex challenges of our time in the areas of resources, materials, energy and digitalization.
Prof. Jens Traupe from the Board of the Association of Friends is no stranger to this range of topics. He studied at TU Clausthal in the 1980s and described in his welcoming address what has made his alma mater special for many years: "Our university is powerful, influential and has a familiar, personal face."
Prof. Thomas Ulrich (Institute of Geotechnology and Mineral Resources, Department of Geosciences) spoke about the fascination of diamonds in everyday life and research in his keynote speech. The first diamond was found in India in 1775. The probability of finding such an exclusive stone today is a little higher than winning the lottery.
The dozen diamond jubilarians considered their studies in Clausthal to be a great gain. This became clear during the presentation of the certificates, when the President asked each of them a question about their time at university. After graduating, many gained international experience in their careers, for example in India, South Africa, Peru or Turkey. Dr. Rainald Heinisch reported on very special experiences in Iran. In the 1970s, he accompanied Berthold Beitz, the Chief Representative of the Krupp Group, to Iran and also met the Shah of Persia. In 1976, the Asian country was allowed to acquire a 25 percent stake in Friedrich Krupp GmbH.
After the official ceremony, jubilarians, students and guests exchanged views at a get-together.
